The Level 5 Diploma in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector (DTLLS) Course is designed for candidates who are currently employed in a full-time teaching or training position and want to obtain a PGCE equivalent qualification within the industry. Candidates who pursue this alternative to a degree will be able to achieve full teacher status in a much shorter time frame and for a fraction of the cost.

Who is this course for?

The course is designed for current teachers and trainers who want to advance their careers by earning a higher level of qualification. This includes people who work in private training and those who volunteer and want to gain experience. 

Successful candidates can apply for Qualified Teacher of Learning and Skills Status (QTLS), leading to full-time teaching positions in colleges of higher education.

Requirements

There is no requirement for prior teaching experience.

Working at Level 2 in both Mathematics and English.

Access to 100 hours of teaching.

For the 8-hour observations, it is preferable to have someone with at least a Level 5 teaching qualification; however, if you do not have access to someone, please contact us, and we will see what we can do.

ICT fundamentals (the course is online using our Moodle site, the level of skill set is just basic Microsoft office and able to upload attachments).

Candidates who have completed some Learning and Development units in the past that can be applied to this qualification.

Candidates who already have a CET want to upgrade to a full level 5 teaching qualification that qualifies them for qualified teaching pay.

Candidates who are assessors and want to gain a teaching/training qualification are encouraged to apply.

Candidates with a CET who want to upgrade to a full level 5 teaching qualification that applies to qualified teaching pay scales across FE institutes and apply for QTLS through the Society for Education and Training.

Career path

Successful candidates can apply for full-time teaching positions in secondary schools or further education colleges. This qualification is typically widely recognised, and when combined with relevant experience, it can lead to a wide range of exciting teaching opportunities all over the world.

Units

All units have a specified number of credits allocated to them. We deliver four mandatory units and three optional units. The minimum number of credits that need to be achieved are 120.

Teaching Practice

You are required to cover 100 hours of teaching practice. Within these 100 hours, you must produce 8 hours of observations of your teaching practice.

There are four mandatory units:

Developing teaching, Learning and Assessment in Education and Training (65 GLH 20 credits)

This unit aims to give the learner knowledge, understanding and skills relating to teaching, learning and assessment in education and training. This unit relies heavily on the learner to review their own skills and understanding by reflecting on their teaching in a practical context – based on the planning, delivering, and assessing of inclusive teaching and learning in a specialist area. (This specialism can be further developed through the selection of appropriate optional units). The learner must demonstrate their ability to create and maintain an inclusive learning environment and then evaluate their own teaching to develop their practice.

Teaching, learning and Assessment in Education and Training (65 GLH 20 credits)

This unit aims to give the learner knowledge, understanding and skills relating to teaching, learning and assessment in education and training. The unit aims to develop the learner’s understanding of the principles and practices underpinning practical skills. Underpinning the understanding of teaching and learning is an understanding of the role and responsibilities of a teacher in education and training. This understanding helps learners appreciate their role concerning their learners and other professionals when negotiating and agreeing on individual learning goals.

Theories, Principles and Models in Education and Training (60 GLH 20 credits)

The unit aims to give learners underpinning knowledge and understanding to help develop their own practice in education and training. The unit addresses the importance of understanding the role of communication so that the learner is better equipped to deliver effectively. The unit also addresses the underpinning knowledge needed to create approaches to assessment that meet learner and assessment needs. By developing an understanding of theories and models influencing curriculum development, the learner can relate them to their own area of specialism. By developing an understanding and ability to apply theories and models of reflection, the learner will be better positioned to use the skills in the evaluation and improvement of their practice.

Wider Professional Practice and Development in Education and Training (50 GLH, 15 credits)

This unit aims to enable the learner to understand and apply the concept of professionalism and dual professionalism to promote wider professional practice in education and training. Based on an understanding of professional values, the learner will be able to appreciate influences on their practice in an area of specialism, determining their role and responsibilities. In addition, the unit allows learners to develop an understanding of the social, political and economic factors that influence policy and the impact that policy has on their curriculum and practice. The unit also encourages learners to explore the impact of organisational processes and procedures, including those resulting from increasing accountability to stakeholders and external bodies.

Action Research (50 GLH, 15 credits)

This unit aims to enable learners to carry out action research in an area of professional practice. The unit helps learners understand the nature and purpose of action research, conduct action research, and present the outcomes. The unit also involves evaluating own practice concerning action research.

Developing, Using and Organising Resources in Education and Training (50 GLH, 15 credits)

This unit aims to enable learners to develop, use and organise resources in the lifelong learning sector. The unit covers the purpose, development, and use of resources, organising them, and enabling access to others. It also covers legal requirements, responsibilities relating to resources and evaluating own practice in their development and use.

Teaching in a Specialist Area (50 GLH, 15 credits)

This unit aims to develop learners’ knowledge and skills concerning teaching in a specialist area. The unit includes considering the aims and philosophy of education and training in a specialist area and the aims and structure of key qualifications and learning programme qualifications available. It also looks at curriculum issues, inclusive learning and teaching, and evaluating and improving one’s own practice in a specialist area.
